The Saint Carl Borromeo School in Altdorf, located in the middle of the majestic Swiss Alps
and near Lake Lucerne, is the home of the Borromeo Music Festival.
The two-week long instrumental program is designed for talented pianists and string players
who come to deepen their knowledge of the solo and chamber music repertoire on their instruments.


The total fees for the 2018 Borromeo Music Festival include:

  • 4 individual lessons
  • Chamber music coachings
  • Participation in solo and chamber music masterclasses and recitals
  • Room and board at Campus Altdorf with three meals per day (double or single occupancy)
  • Free attendance of all festival concerts
  • Regular access to practice rooms and pianos
  • Round trip shuttle from Zurich Airport to Altdorf
  • Excursions organized by the festival:

Double occupancy: $3,250 USD

Single occupancy: $3,750 USD

The guest fees are for auditors and guests of our accepted festival students. Guest fees include:

  • Admission to all concerts, master classes and chamber music coachings
  • Room & Board with three meals per day at Campus Altdorf
  • Round trip shuttle from Zurich Airport to Altdorf
  • Excursions organized by the festival

Double occupancy: $2,300 USD

Single occupancy: $2,800 USD

Local auditors: $300 USD per week (admission to all concerts, master classes and chamber music coachings).


All festival participants are housed at the newly renovated Campus Altdorf, a hotel dorm nested amidst green meadows and near several hiking paths, at a five-minute walk’s distance from the festival school. All meals are prepared by an in-house chef and his crew.

Before booking your flight tickets – keep in mind the following important dates and information:

Monday, July 16th – Arrival of all participants. Festival greeting and mandatory orientation is at 8:30 pm at Campus Altdorf, the Borromeo Music Festival’s hotel.

            Tuesday, July 17th – Festival activities begin!

            Saturday, July 28th – Final concert and festival party by Lake Lucerne

            Sunday, July 29th – Checkout from Campus Altdorf and shuttle to Zurich Airport, departing at 6:00 am.


  1. Passport / Visa – Be sure you are in possession of a valid passport, and check the visa requirements of your own country for travel to Switzerland. International students should apply for the Schengen Visa. US passport holders do not need a visa to visit Switzerland.
  2. Parental or Guardian Release Form – International students and auditors under the age of 18 who are not accompanied by a parent or legal guardian must also send in the “Parental or Guardian Release Form”.
  3. Health Insurance – Each participant must have their own health insurance and send proof to the festival administration.
  4. Travel information from Zurich Airport to the Borromeo Music Festival – International students and faculty fly into Zurich Airport (ZRH), where the festival will provide a shuttle bus on Monday, July 16th at 6:30 pmThe festival staff will meet everyone at 5:45 pm in the waiting area in front of the rental car center, which is located inside Zurich Airport.

Students and faculty who will not be using the festival shuttle please read carefully the following instructions:

Swiss trains are exceptionally punctual and reliable, and there are regular trains every hour to Altdorf, the town of the Borromeo Music Festival. Airport and Swiss railway staff speak English.

It is the participant’s responsibility to purchase their own train ticket. This can be done online or at the Zurich Airport train station. Make sure to buy your train tickets for travel to Flüelen (“Flüelen Bahnhof” station). The approximate time on the train from Zurich Airport to Flüelen is 1 hour and 45 minutes.

Once in Flüelen, participants can board the free festival shuttle that runs at every hour from the train station to Campus Altdorf (the festival’s hotel) from 4pm to 8 pm on Monday, July 16th. The shuttle’s driving time to the festival location is approximately 10 minutes.
